It is the Division of Traffic Engineering’s mission to preserve the quality of life for all Jersey City residents and visitors by providing a safe and inviting transportation infrastructure through continued communication, inclusion, and accountability.

The Division's staff maintains over 280 signalized intersections, 200 miles of roadway striping and markings, and 100,000 traffic and parking-related signs. Traffic Engineering works closely with other transportation agencies including the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Hudson County, North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, NJ Transit, NY-NJ Port Authority, and the NJ Turnpike Authority. This Division promotes and encourages the use of other modes of transportation besides single-passenger vehicles. The City's bike lane network continues to grow with nearly 20 miles of protected bike lanes constructed since 2019.

Jersey City is the first city in the State of New Jersey to commit to the Vision Zero initiative, which recognizes traffic-related severe injuries and fatalities as unacceptable and preventable. This Division played a key role in creating the Vision Zero Action Plan, which identifies attainable actions and strategies to aid in reaching the goal of zero severe injuries and fatalities on Jersey City roadways by the year 2026.
