Coronavirus Information

Click here for the Jersey City Covid-19 Info page.

2019-nCoV is a respiratory infection caused by a novel (new) virus that arose from the area of Wuhan, China in December, 2019. Most of the early cases of this illness were linked to a large seafood and animal market suggesting possible animal-to-person spread of the virus. The market closed on January 2, 2020 as part of the investigation and response to this outbreak.

The Jersey City Department of Health & Human Services is in contact with local, state, and federal health officials when any possible case is identified in our area.

The CDC recommends taking the following general precautions, as with any respiratory illness:

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Maintain a social distance of 6 feet (2 arm lengths) or more from other people when outside your home.
  • Wear a mask in public settings, and around people who do not live in your household.
  • Avoid big crowds to limit the risk of exposure to COVID-19.
  • Avoid sick contact. If a household member is sick, maintain 6 feet of distance from the sick person.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue/ use inside of the elbow if there is no immediate access to tissues. Discard the tissues in the trash and wash your hands immediately.
  • Stay home if you are sick and talk to your health care provider. Call your doctor ahead before the visit. If you test positive for COVID-19, stay home and self- isolate except to get medical care/for any emergencies.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
