Johnston Avenue Safety Improvements

The Department of Infrastructure will soon be paving Johnston Avenue as part of a Federal grant project. The Department is proposing to implement a new two-way protected bike lane on Johnston Avenue. The proposed two-way bikeway would replace the parking lane on the south  side of the street.

This project will:

- Create a safe, direct connection between Grand Street, Pacific Ave, the Morris Canal Greenway, and Liberty State Light Rail Station.

- Make it easier for residents and visitors to bike to Liberty State Park.

- Expand the city’s protected bikeway network and advance our Vision Zero safety goals.

This improvement is part of Jersey City’s Bike Master Plan, building a safer, more connected, and more equitable transportation system for everyone.

The Division of Transportation Planning conducted a parking inventory study throughout 2024. The study found that the utilization of parking spaces along Johnston Avenue averages 56%. The installation of the protected bikeway would reduce the existing parking supply to 57% of its current capacity. Therefore, while each block experiences different levels of parking demand, it is anticipated that there would be no impact to parking capacity along the length of the corridor.

City Council would need to adopt an ordinance to prohibit parking along the south side of Johnston Avenue to accommodate this new configuration.
