Bergen Ave & MLK Dr Mobility Plan

Mayor Fulop announced a plan to convert north-south corridors in Jersey City to one-way vehicular travel in order to accommodate dedicated multimodal facilities. The Department of Infrastructure reviewed the existing traffic volumes, crash records, bus routes, and walking distance between the north-south corridors and developed a conceptual plan for the corridors.

The proposal considers converting Bergen Avenue and MLK Drive/Monticello Avenue to one-way vehicular travel in opposing directions. The space saved by eliminating travel lanes in one direction is proposed to be reallocated to dedicated bus lanes. The proposed configuration will enhance safety for all users in alignment with the City's Vision Zero Action Plan and improve bus service on the 8 and 87 routes, reducing delay and increasing frequency for the public transit service.

The Department will attend a community meeting in Ward F at the City Hall Annex located at 4 Jackson Square on Wednesday, August 13th at 6:30pm.  An ordinance to designate the streets as one-way travel is anticipated to be introduced at the September 10, 2025 meeting of the City Council.
