MAYOR SOLOMON MORE THAN DOUBLES JCPD TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT DIVISION; TRAFFIC SUMMONSES UP 81% IN FIRST WEEK

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Mayor James Solomon today announced that the Jersey City Police Department has more than doubled its Traffic Enforcement Division and that traffic summonses rose 81% in the first week after the additional officers hit the street. On October 19, the City transferred 10 officers from patrol to the Traffic Enforcement Division, bringing the unit to 19 officers, including eight motorcycle operators, as it rebuilds the department's Motorcycle Unit. The following week, the division issued 1,495 summonses, up from 824 the week before.

Major James Solomon said: “Nearly everyone in Jersey City has a story about a driver speeding down their block or running a red light in front of a school, and for years the response from City Hall was that nothing could be done about it. We rebuilt the Traffic Enforcement Division on day one because that answer was never good enough, and now we have put more officers in the unit, and summonses went up 81% in a single week. Everyone deserves safe streets, and we are going to keep building this unit until reckless driving in Jersey City carries a real consequence.”

The expansion builds on the executive order Mayor Solomon signed the day after taking office, which reestablished the Traffic Enforcement Division as a dedicated unit responsible for citywide traffic safety enforcement and freed patrol officers to focus on neighborhood policing. The division's work is part of the City's recommitment to Vision Zero, the goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries on Jersey City streets.
